Just In: Mother throws baby into river and jumps from bridge

Allentown Police have charged the 19-year-old mother who threw her infant into the Lehigh River Sunday, then jumped in herself in a failed murder-suicide. Police said Johnesha Perry is charged with attempted homicide, two counts of aggravate assault and endangering the welfare of a child. She is still in the hospital, under the guard of the Lehigh County Sheriff’s Department.

“Her child is in very critical condition after spending five minutes in the water,” police said.

Perry was seen throwing her baby into the Lehigh River and then jumping from a bridge, at about 1:45 p.m. Sunday at the Hamilton Street Bridge over the Lehigh River, police said. Allentown Police Capt. William Reinik said police found the baby about 700 yards down stream and were able to perform live-saving CPR.

“I commend these two officers for actually going into the river and pulling him out and doing CPR. That’s what saved this baby’s life in my opinion,” Reinik said.

Perry only suffered minor injuries, police said. Police said Perry is competent, knew what she was doing at the time of her attack on her child. Her bail was set at $100,000 bail.
