Designer Spotlight: Beyonce teams up with mother to launch fashion collection

October 29, 2008 Nina 3 comments

Beyonce Knowles has teamed up with her designer mother Tina Knowles, for the launch of their latest collection in their fashion range of House of Dereon. Last night Beyonce and her mom, designer Tina Knowles, celebrated the launch of their new House of Dereon dress collection at Bloomingdale’s in NYC. Many of the gowns, which range in price from $310-$470, are said to be inspired by Beyonce’s upcoming film, “Cadillac Records,” in which she portrays music legend Etta James, which is set for release in December.

House of Dereon was launched by the Knowles family in 2006 as a pret-a-porter fashion line.

Dereon was the maiden name of Beyonce’s grandmother Agnèz Deréon, whose married name Agnèz Beyincé inspired the singer’s first name.

The collection is sold with the tagline “Couture. Kick. Soul” as it represents the spirits of three generations of Knowles women.

Tina is the ‘couture’ thanks to her design talents, Beyonce brings the ‘kick’, while late Agnez had the ’soul’.

According to Yahoo!TV, Melrose Place Gets a New Lease on Life. First Beverly Hills, 90210 and now Melrose Place

Yup, the CW is looking to resurrect the 1990s prime-time soap.

While it’s early in the game, a rep for the network confirms they are working on putting together an updated take on the show.

The series, which revolved around a group of young and very pretty Los Angelenos living in the same apartment complex, is legendary for its over-the-top melodrama and storylines.

Heather Locklear starred as advertising executive Amanda Woodward. Marcia Cross and Kristin Davis also appeared on the show.

Lisa Rinna first told us about the possible plans over a month ago. “I’ve heard a rumor of them bringing back the show like they did 90210,” Rinna said.

At the time, a CW rep denied any such thing was happening.

Melrose ran on Fox from 1992 to 1999 and was produced by Aaron Spelling. It was created by 90210 creator Darren Starr.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Starr will not be involved with the redo and the network is still looking for a writer for the new project.

Beyonce Upstages Jay-Z, Wayne At NYC Show

October 29, 2008 Nina Leave a comment

Lil Wayne, Jay-Z and Ne-Yo brought major star power to Power 105’s Powerhouse concert last night (Oct. 29) at the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J., but it was a surprise appearance by Beyonce that stole the show.

The singer entered the stage during Jay-Z’s set and performed the choreography from her new single, “Single Ladies,” flanked by two background dancers. Though she didn’t say or sing a word, Beyonce, clad in black stretch pants and a black turtleneck, drove the crowd wild when she flashed her extraordinarily large wedding ring at the end of her performance.

Ne-Yo’s set featured hits like “So Sick” and “Miss Independent,” plus guest turns from rappers Plies and Fabolous, who performed their verses on “Bust It Baby Pt. 2″ and “Make Me Better,” respectively.

Lil Wayne began his set fully clothed in a vest, flannel shirt and jeans but ended up topless. Many fans thought that Jay-Z would join Wayne for their duet “Mr. Carter,” but he rapped alone on the track. Backed by a DJ and a full band including a female bassist, Wayne pulled out his own green and white Fender guitar and sang “Comfortable” in a highly off-key pitch. Still, fans sang along as he ran through “Ms. Officer,” which featured Bobby Valentino, “I’m Me,” “Please Don’t Shoot Me Down,” and “My Life.”

Rapper and fellow Cash Money executive Baby appeared to duet with Lil Wayne on “Pop Bottles” just before the younger MC went into a spastic rendition of “A Milli.” Hopping up and down during most of the song as he rhymed, Wayne was eventually calmed down by an assistant who cloaked him in a robe, James Brown-style. For a touch of comedy, he closed the set by lip-synching Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You.”

Jay-Z was the evening’s last performer and touted the most elaborate stage setup and a full band dressed in suits. A large TV screen hung from the ceiling above the stage while another three-part screen spread across the stage itself and behind Jay-Z as he ran through classics like “Hello” and “U Don’t Know.” The screen continually showed a montage of 1930s gangsters, continuing the theme of from last album, “American Gangster,” as well as clips from Jay-Z’s many videos.

After “Roc Boys” and “Lucifer,” Jay-Z said he was only going to play “the sh*t that I like now.” Tracks like “Can I Live,” “Blue Magic” and “Swagger Like Us” followed, and Jay-Z reminded the crowd to vote on Nov. 4.

“This is the most important election ever,” he said. “Rosa sat so Martin could walk, Martin walked so Obama could run and Obama is running so we all could fly.”

Common’s New Set to be Released in December

October 29, 2008 Nina 1 comment

According to Billboard.com, Common has announced Dec. 9 as the new release date for his forthcoming Geffen album, “Universal Mind Control.” The set was originally expected in July.

Two songs, “Announcement” and “Universal Mind Control” both of which feature Pharrell Williams, have already been released. The album also includes two fresh songs, “Gladiator” and “Inhale.”

The former comes closest to prototypical sincere Common rapping, as he rhymes about destroying other MCs over horn wails, driving drums and a thick bassline.

“Punch Drunk Love” now features Kanye West spitting the catchy chorus “Am I crazy, or was you giving me the eye?” “Sex 4 Sugar,” which Common previously described as a conversation with a dancer, now has faster drums, and “Everywhere,” which was formerly called “Runaway” and set to feature Santogold, now sports a dreamy layered chorus, sans Santogold, over a guitar riff similar to Pat Benatar’s “Love Is a Battlefield.”

The album’s production is still split between the Neptunes and OutKast cohort Mr. DJ. West has not contributed any production to “Universal Mind Control.”

Here is the track listing for “Universal Mind Control”:

“Universal Mind Control”
“Punch Drunk Love” featuring Kanye West
“Make My Day” featuring Cee-Lo Green
“Sex 4 Sugar”
“Announcement” featuring Pharrell Williams
“Gladiator”
“Changes”
“Inhale”
“What a World”
“Everywhere”

Alaska’s largest newspaper endorses Obama-Biden

October 29, 2008 Nina 1 comment

According to Essence.com, Alaska’s largest newspaper endorses Obama-Biden. Sarah Palin being tapped as Sen. John McCain’s vice presidential running mate didn’t sway the editorial board of the Anchorage Daily News. The largest paper in the state has endorsed Sens. Barack Obama and Joe Biden for president. It should be noted that the paper also didn’t endorse Palin when she ran for governor.

How much more sad can that get for Palin, that her own state doesn’t even back her up? It goes to show the type of person she is. Is that really who you want as the Vice President of the United States? God forbid.

I think you should really, think about who you plan on voting for. As for me well it’s kind of obvious who I’m voting for. Make sure you go out and vote.
